The best options in divorce may not always be fair

Many Colorado couples who are facing a bitter divorce may feel that they are being treated unfairly during the settlement negotiations. According to one author, however, disdain for the soon to be ex-spouse may cloud the best options available to people who are negotiating the divorce settlement.

Divorcees should be aware of what constitutes marital property

Colorado residents undergoing a divorce need to be aware of the differences between marital property and separate property as well as know whether they live in a community property state or an equitable distribution state. There are nine community property states, in which marital property needs to be separated under a 50/50 rule. The other 41 states, including Colorado, are equitable distribution states. These states require the distribution of marital property to be fair and equitable to both parties during a divorce.

Working Moms and Custody Battles

The legal battle begins when couples divorce. Because of the shift in traditional gender roles, custody and spousal support may now be more complicated than ever. It is estimated that 30 percent of working wives make more income than their husbands, resulting in the father staying at home and taking care of the children. Dads are often the primary caretakers and are awarded the alimony and custody of children as frequently as women.

First month statistics on Boulder county civil unions

Boulder County has been keeping records of the number of civil unions since the beginning of May, and statistics show that the amount of women entering into civil unions is far greater than the amount of men. The Boulder County Clerk and Recorder's Office recorded 105 licenses for civil unions for the month. Of that total, 103 were for same-sex partners while two were for heterosexual couples. Of the 103 licenses for same-sex couples, 79 were for female partners while 24 were for male couples. That equates to more than three-fourths of the licenses going to female couples.
