When is the overpayment debt dischargable

When considering a divorce, couples may want to take some precautions to prevent unexpected surprises. In many states, including Colorado, overpayment of spousal support may not be dischargeable when filing for bankruptcy. Under the marital separation agreement, the debt must qualify as a domestic support obligation. There are currently four prerequisites for domestic support obligation: The debt must be owed to a spouse, in the nature of alimony, the result of a legal separation and the debt must not be assigned to a non-governmental entity.

More big businesses bestow gay partner benefits

Corporations and big businesses across the U.S., including Colorado, are extending health insurance and other spousal benefits to same-sex domestic partners of employees. For the first time, the majority of Fortune 500 companies and 90 percent of all large employers are showing corporate support for gay and transgender rights.

No charges for man who inspired "127 Hours" film

Aron Ralston, the Colorado adventurer whose story formed the basis of the movie "127 Hours" was recently taken into custody along with his girlfriend in connection with a domestic dispute. He will not be facing any charges in the domestic violence matter, although his girlfriend is still facing charges that include disturbing the peace and assault. The case was reviewed by prosecutors who determined they did not have a reasonable chance of convicting Ralston.

Same-sex couples and divorce divorce

Non-traditional families have some similarities with traditional two-parent families, such as love and co-habitation. These families may face difficulties that traditional families do not, however, especially in regards to marriage and divorce. In some states, including Colorado, same-sex couples do not have the right to get married, and as some couples have discovered, many couples who do wed in a state that recognizes same-sex marriage have a difficult process ahead of them when trying to obtain a divorce in a nonrecognition state.
