Key steps to getting a divorce in Colorado

Are you thinking about getting a divorce in Colorado? If so, it is very important to make sure that you take all of the right legal steps to do so. Here are some of the most important ones to keep in mind.

The first step is just a decision that you and your spouse have to make. If you agree about the divorce, you can file for it jointly. If not, you may need to file on your own and inform your spouse that you have done so.

The decision that you make here determines the next step, which is getting the right paperwork. In either case, you have to get a cover sheet for basic case information and a petition to tell the court about the case and the requests that you have -- such as your need for child support. If you are filing alone, you also need a summons for your spouse. If you file together, of course, you don't need one.

After you get the paperwork filled out, you have to pick the right court for the filing. You are not permitted to pick any court that you want under Colorado law; at least one party -- you or your spouse -- has to live within the county in which you file.

The final step, when not filing jointly, is to inform your spouse by serving him or her the papers. You can do this on your own, if you would like, or have an adult do it for you. If you have no other options, you can also have the police do it on your behalf.
