What factors can affect a child custody order?

When you are trying to find out what is going to happen with child custody, things can be rather difficult. It is imperative for you to think carefully about all of the factors that come into the picture so that you can determine how you are going to handle things. Before you make any decisions, think about these questions.

How are child custody decisions made?

Child custody decisions are made either by you and your ex working together or by the court. Generally, parents who can come to an agreement are more likely to end up with a mutually agreeable custody agreement that takes all of the important points into account. If the court has to decide on who is going to have custody of the child, the element of familiarity is lost because the court doesn't live with the child.

How do child custody cases differ for married and unmarried couples?

Child custody cases are pretty much the same, no matter what the marital status of the parents might be. In some cases, it is necessary to establish paternity if you and the child's other parent weren't married when the child was born.

Are only parents involved in child custody cases?

It is possible for people other than parents to try to get custody of children. This is usually the case when a child is being abused or if the parents aren't able to care for the child. Typically, the people involved in these cases are close family members who have an interest in how the child is reared.

If you have any questions about a child custody issue, it is imperative for you to find out what the applicable laws say about the issue. This can help you to determine what you are going to do to resolve the issues at hand.
