The type of adoption you choose directly impacts your experience

Adoption is a beautiful experience for many Colorado families. Before they initiate the process, most people don't realize that there is more than one type of adoption. The type of adoption that is used in your case directly impacts the experience that you will have.

There are two primary types of adoption — closed and open. Historically, the majority of adoptions were closed adoptions. However, the preference for open adoptions has become more common with families as time marches on.

A closed adoption is one in which the adoptive parents and birth parents don't know each other. They don't have any contact, and there isn't any identifying information passed between the parties. Only basic information like a medical history and brief educational background of the birth parent(s) are exchanged. Once the child is adopted, there is no ongoing contact between the birth parents and the child or the adoptive parent(s).

An open adoption is one that has at least some degree of contact. The birth parents and adoptive parents know each other, or know of each other. More detailed information is exchanged. The two sets of parents can have contact with each other directly or communicate through the adoption agency. The birth parents can have some contact with the child, but the adoptive parents get to set the conditions for this.

In all adoptions, the adoptive parents must ensure that they are doing what is best for the child. This might not always be easy, but it is part of the responsibility these loving individuals take on when they opt to bring a non-biological child into their home. Make sure that you are also protecting your own interests throughout the process.
